LOW-COST TRAVEL

Even though money is not an issue, I travel as cheaply as possible – I stay in the cheapest places, usually dorm rooms in hostels, and take public transport. I travel in a vehicle I can sleep in and cook most of my meals. It gives great freedom. I have many more adventures than if I were to take tours, stay in hotels and eat in expensive restaurants. 

Infrequently, I go on expensive adventures. A week on a live-aboard dive boat in Palau costs north of $5,000. Rafting the 220 miles of the Grand Canyon was the greatest adventure trip of my life, but cost over $5,000. Travelling to many of the 193 UN countries is often not cheap. Security in Somalia and many Sahel countries is exorbitant.
Attesting to my cheap travel, in 2024, after 18 years of travel, I had more money than when I retired.

I would like to think of myself as a full time traveler. I have been retired since 2006 and in that time have traveled every winter for four to seven months.
