The Anasazi arrived in about 1000 AD and built dwellings from stone and wattle/mud under overhangs. Tree ring analysis of logs from ruins showed a drought from 1276 to 1299. By 1300, all the canyons were empty. They migrated south via Chaco Canyon and became the Pueblo Indians of New Mexico.
The majority of the ruins are in the Cedar Mesa area.

GRAND GULCH is a 52-mile-long canyon full of Anasazi ruins and rock art in a great canyon. My backpacks here are 1. Bullet Canyon to Kane Gulch Ranger Station 2. Bullet Canyon to Collin’s Spring 3. Collin’s Spring almost to the San Juan River.

CHACO CULTURE. In northwest New Mexico, it was a crossroads between SE Utah and the Pueblos of New Mexico. The campground has astronomy viewing. At least three days to explore the area.
