RIO ABISEO NP WHS is home to a large number of species of flora and fauna, as well as over 30 pre-Columbian archaeological sites.
The park comprises an isolated river basin covered by forests, transitioning into a mountain landscape at higher elevations. The critically endangered Yellow-tailed Woolly Monkey is known to live in the park and relies on it for its survival as a species. The most famous archaeological site in the park is Gran Pajatén, a ruined settlement that was occupied between 900 and 200 BCE, and 200 BCE to 600 CE.
This is one of the most difficult to visit WHS in South America. 3 days of travelling to see only a tiny corner of a vast national park
21-hour overnight bus from Trujillo (Chan Chan) to Tarapoto and then 3 hours by minivan/colectivo to Juanjui. From Juanjui, 40 minutes by car to Huicungo, a village on the Rio Huayabamba. 30-minute boat ride upstream to Río Abiseo which runs into Río Huayabamba, then 1.5 hours upstream to the lodge. Parts are very shallow and may need to wade. Boat into the National Park/WHS for about 30 minutes to the Catarata Maquisapa. This is the only place visited in the WHS.
Summary: Fly Lima to Tarapoto (2 hours), drive to Juanjui (3 hours). The next day, drive by car and boat to the waterfall Maquisapa (4 hours one way) and back to Juanjui the same day. Recommend stay 2 nights in Abiseo Lodge (Website) next to the park ranger house and only a 10-minute boat ride from the official NP territory. the lodge. Catarata Maquisapa 15 meters; a 15 minute walk. The lodge is in “high jungle”, not flat and low like Amazon rainforest. There’s less wildlife compared to Manu. An adventure & nature holiday.

HISTORIC CENTRE of LIMA WHS
Plaza de Armas and the San Francisco Convent are the main attractions, and the library at Santo Domingo is impressive, Palacio de Torre Tagle or Casa de Aliaga, which are not without interest. Plaza San Martin, centered around a statue of its eponymous hero on horseback, and the Iglesia de La Merced, with its neat baroque facade. The balconies throughout the historic center are the main visual highlights. The Mestizo Baroque church portal at La Merced rivals that of San Francisco. Plus, there is a Modernist façade or two and plenty of splashes of color everywhere, as is common in colonial architecture.

SACRED CITY of CARAL-SUPE WHS 5000-year-old 626-hectare archaeological site on a dry desert terrace overlooking the green valley of the Supe River. It is the oldest centre of civilization in the Americas. Exceptionally well-preserved – monumental stone and earthen platform mounts and sunken circular courts. One of 18 urban settlements situated in the same area, six large pyramidal structures. A quipu (the knot system used in Andean civilizations to record information) found on the site testifies to the development and complexity of Caral society.
The Amphitheater had remains of musical instruments (flutes)
Drive 3 hours
After visiting Caral, visit Vichama instead of going to lunch in Barranca. Vichama became the center of the Caral culture around 1800 BC, when Caral itself had declined. Vichama, on the way back to Lima along the coast, was worth visiting. Relief figures of humans, on an interior layer of one of the temples. Don’t trust google maps to just go to Vichama — it’ll lead you to the backside of the site — a large sandy hill. You need to search for “Centro de Visitantes Vichama”)
Buses from Lima to Barranca and/ or Supe. Cheap Hostal Los Angeles has a nice woman that runs it. Barranca use ET Valle Sagrado Caral to the entrance. Obligatory tour 1 hour
The site is perfectly set up to be visited independently with bilingual interpretation panels Only beige stone pyramids remain.
Amphitheater Temple is the most remarkable building, a large sunken circular plazas. Huanca Pyramid and Gallery Pyramid which are beautiful square shaped stepped pyramids. Greater Pyramid is the largest, 170 x 150 metres, the low profile makes it look not that impressive. In front of the stepped pyramid is sunken circular plaza the diameter is 37 metres. Central Pyramid and Quarry Pyramid from a viewing platform.
Half-day trip for 25 EUR. road paved and half an hour. December to May crossing the river. To the east, cross a bridge on foot, and walk 2km to the site.
The walls of the buildings were painted yellow.
